Shaker Village Letterpress
Chantal and I visited the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine while we were on our honeymoon this summer. This village houses the last remaining Shakers where there are only three people left to carry on the Shaker belief.
It was an interesting visit. We were able to see many examples of the famous Shaker furniture and architecture. One of the most interesting parts to us was when our tour guide told us that the Shakers still print the labels for their famous herbs and products using a letterpress.
In the past they also printed a newsletter and many other items on their press, at a time when all printing was done using a letterpress.
Unfortunately we weren’t able to see the press or find any information about what kind they use, but here are some photos of of some old examples that are surely printed on the Shaker press.
